Dr Adele Hyland AM
Executive Dean WDSA
Adele has had an extensive and varied career in Dance, having performed, adjudicated and choreographed to international acclaim. As a performer, she has represented Australia in three World Championships and is one of only two Australian dancers to have won National Titles in 4 genres of dance. She choreographed for the film ‘Strictly Ballroom’ and multiple commercials and television shows, including ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and ‘Strictly Dancing’. Adele was awarded an Australia Medal (AM) in the Queens Birthday Honours List of 2017 for significant contributions to Dance Education. She was also awarded the United States Heritage Award for International Services to Dance in 2001 for the coordination and choreography of the Sydney 2000 Olympics Closing Ceremony.
She maintained a private Dance studio in Sydney over a period of 35 years, whilst also teaching from Primary to Secondary levels within the NSW Education system. In 2008 she developed a Bachelor of Dance program that provided students with the opportunity to gain tertiary qualifications in Dance majoring in their genre of choice. This course was a ‘world first’ and was implemented at Wesley Institute from 2008 to 2015. It was then introduced at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in 2015. Adele acted as Head of Dance at both institutions.
Currently, Adele is the Australian delegate to the World Dance Council and is a member of the World Dance Organisation Education Committee. She teaches and enjoys many genres of Dance, with a particular passion for the Latin American genre. She has had a great deal of success as a teacher and mentor to both aspiring and international prize-winning Dancers and is grateful for the opportunity to pursue high standards in holistic Dance practice as the Executive Dean at the World DanceSport Academy (WDSA).
